Our Mission

It shall be the mission of the Houston Area Partnership for FASD to promote awareness and encourage resource development for people interested in or affected by prenatal alcohol exposure.

Welcome to Houston Area Partnership for FASD

We are a Houston area volunteer partnership for FASD that was formed approximately five years ago. Formerly known as the Houston FASD Consortium, the group successfully planned, coordinated, and hosted four annual conferences on FASD for parents and professionals in the Houston area.  These conference featured renowned speakers i.e. Kathleen Tavenner Mitchell, MHS Vice President and International Spokesperson for NOFAS, Dan Dubovsky, MSW, National FASD Specialist for the SAMHSA FASD Center for Excellence, and Heather Carmichael Olson, PhD, attending clinical psychologist at theUniversity of Washington FAS clinic.

However, a local FASD parent advocate joined the partnership and encouraged the members to look beyond conference planning. The newly energized partnership developed a strategic plan in 2010 and re-established a Parent/Support Group in 2011

About FASD

"Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders is the name given to a continuum of physical and mental health problems that arise as a result of a fetus being exposed to alcohol in utero. A diagnosis of FASD can be hard to make unless a mother discusses her drinking with her doctor or the child's doctor. Some children may be misdiagnosed as having autism, ADHD, oppositional defiant or conduct disorder, pervasive developmental delay, learning disabilities, emotional/behavior problems, reactive attachment disorder and many other conditions.

The Parent/Support Group

The Parent/Support Group of HAP for FASD meets on a monthly basis.  It consists of a diverse group of birth and adoptive parents of children with FASD whose children range from elementary age to young adulthood.  The Parent/Support Group offers a safe, confidential place for parents, caregivers, and others to discuss issues related to FASD, share helpful experiences, plan and participate in outings, and learn about relevant resources.

The meetings are inclusive and “brown bag” format; bring a lunch and join in!  Parent/Support Group meetings are free to all attendees and are held on the last Friday of every month from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.  The meeting location is:
